Trained as a wood carver and storekeeper. He had a lovely tenor voice. William drowned 6 May 1898 when the PWS "Maitland" was wrecked in a gale off Barrenjoey. (There is now, 1998, a memorial for the 100th anniversary of the sinking near where it happened.) 5 6

William and Matha were ½ first cousins.
