In 1901 Walter Spackman, aged 38, born in Wootton Bassett Wiltshire, shipping clerk, and wife Maria, aged 47, born in Polstead Suffolk, were living at 26 High Street, East Ham Essex. With them was step-daughter Lilian M Leftly (16) of Plumstead Kent, silk winder.
In 1911 Walter Spackman, aged 50, born in Wootton Bassett Wilts, shipping clerk, and wife of 18 years Maria, aged 56, born in Polstead Suffolk (mother of 2 children, both deceased), were living at 346 Albert Road, North Woolwich London.

"No hope for a future life" was a phrase in a letter left by Walter Spackman (68), of North Woolwich, who was found gassed. A verdict of "Suicide while of an unsound mind" was returned at the inquest to-day.
