CONCORD - Donald Seavey Phipps, 84, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at CRVNA Hospice House in Concord.
Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of Harold Reed Phipps and Millicent (Seavey) Phipps.
He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1942. In 1945, he graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He also studied ROTC.
On Feb. 19, 1950, he married Olivia Fitz of Portsmouth.
From 1945 to 1948, he worked at Worthington Pump and Machinery Corp. in Harrison, N.J. He went on to work at Public Service Co. of New Hampshire from 1948 to 1955 as a machinist. In 1956, he worked for the state of New Hampshire as a civil engineer in road design until 1967.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Olivia (Fitz) Phipps of Pembroke; and his cousin, Muriel Maker of Glastonbury, Conn.
WE REMEMBER: He worked for the State Department of Resources and Economic Development as assistant surveyor of forest lands from 1972 to 1975. In 1976, he worked for the State Highway Department as head chainman and then worked as a civil engineer in road design from 1977 to 1994.
From 1994 until recently, he worked as a semi-retired land surveyor.
He was a registered professional engineer in the state of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, a licensed land surveyor in New Hampshire, a justice of the peace and former vestryman, trustee and deacon.
He performed volunteer work for Grace Episcopal Church, the Manchester and Concord Congregational Churches and Faith Meetinghouse Church. He also researched town charters and compared them to present day boundaries for the N.H. State Archives. In addition, he performed research on various boundaries for the Library of Congress.
Mr. Phipps also enjoyed writing poetry on old farms and surveying for the Library of Congress.
