Edith Harriet Shuttleworth

PORTSMOUTH -- Edith Harriet Shuttleworth Hartson of Portsmouth, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, surrounded by her family.

She was a longtime independent resident of SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation in Portsmouth. Born Oct. 19, 1907, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late William J. Shuttleworth, a farmer and engineer on the B&M Railroad, and Mary Elizabeth Newick. She was the seventh of nine children.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara J. Hambleton of Fort Myers, Fla. and Frye Island, Maine, and Marilyn E. Regan of North Hampton; and her son, Robert V. Hartson of Stratham; grandchildren, Michele Regan-Ladd and husband, Ryan Regan-Ladd, Deborah Regan and husband, Peter Kelley, Kate Regan and husband, Chris Byrne, Barbara E. Regan, Stephen Hartson and Kevin Hartson, as well as five great-grandchildren, Eoin Gillespie, Sarah Regan-Kelley, Ethan and Kera Regan-Byrne, and Erin Regan-Ladd; and her brother, Frank Shuttleworth of Englewood, Fla.

She was predeceased by her son, Donald E. and her seven siblings: Florence (Floss) Fitz, William, Ira, Jack, Marion Shapleigh, Clarence and Albert (Chuck).

Services will be held at a later date. The Remick & Gendron Funeral Home of Hampton is in charge of the arrangements.

WE REMEMBER: She graduated from Portsmouth High School and later married Charles F. Hartson in 1930, who predeceased her in 1980. They lived with their four children in Portsmouth before moving to Stratham.

She worked as a secretary for 25 years in civil service, first at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, then at Pease Air Force Base. She was always impeccably dressed and coiffed, a true professional.

She was a women of grace, soft-spoken and kindhearted, who always had a kind word and took interest in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities. An avid bowler, she won many trophies. She was an avid sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox, and enjoyed both of the World Series. She was a lifelong member of the Eastern Star.
