Stephen, aged 19 years, agricultural labourer, was staying with his grandfather Thomas Bodkin in 1871.

In 1881, Stephen, aged 28 years, was living at Paddock Wood in Brenchley with the family of George Alderman. He was employed as a railway labourer. During 1881 Stephen married George's daughter Rosanna.
