  Research Notes:

Robert le Vavasour...in the 9th of King John, paid a fine of a thousand and two hundred marks, and two palfreys, that Maud, his daughter, widow of Theobald Walter, might be married to Fulk Fitz-Warine, an eminent baron, in those days.... 1

--------------------------------

The name of Robert le Vavasour's first wife is not known*. His second wife was Juliana, probably a daughter of Thomas de Multon. For the health of his soul and that of Juliana his wife Robert le Vavasour granted to St. Peter's, York, at a date not earlier than 1219, free transit in Thevedale for the quarry there. He was dead in 1227, when an agreement was made between William de Perci and Robert de Cokefeld concerning the wardship and marriage of John son and heir of Robert le Vavasur. By his first wife he had a daughter Maud, whose first husband was Theobald son of Hervey Walter; and in 1207, after Robert le Vavasour her father had given 1200 marks and 2 palfreys for her second marriage, she was given in marriage to Fulk FitzWarin...

* A footnote to this reads: "It is very doubtful whether the statement from MS Dodsworth in Sallay Chartulary, i, p. 68 that Robert's daughter Maud was the niece of Roger de Birkin, described as her avunculus, can be trusted." 2

The Extinct and Dormant Peerages of the Northern Counties of England, by John William Clay, F.S.A. (1913), show Maud's mother as Juliana, daughter of Gilbert de Ros (p. 225), with a footnote correction which reads: Julian, dau. of Robert de Multon (Misc. Gen. et Her., i, 193). On p. 142, he lists the children of Thomas de Multon, including his daughter Julian who married Robert le Vavasour. John Burke's A general and heraldic dictionary of the peerages of England, Ireland, and Scotland... (quoted above) also shows Robert's wife as Juliana de Ros and his heir, John le Vavasour. Neither of these sources mention the fact that Julian was Robert's second wife and not the mother of Maud.

The advowson [of Bolton by Bowland], like the manor, was divided into moieties. Charter no. 114 shows that the advowson, i.e. a moiety of it, was retained by Robert le Vavasour when he gave his land of Bolton to Theobald Walter on marriage with Maud his daughter. Theobald Walter, their son, however, included the advowson in his gift of his land in Bolton to Roger de Birkin... 3

1 A general and heraldic dictionary of the peerages of England, Ireland, and Scotland, extinct, dormant, and in abeyance., John Burke, 1831, p. 534. Note that John Burke further on shows Robert le Vavasour living in 39 Hen. III, confusing him with another Robert le Vavasour of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. This confusion appears in other sources as well. As has been noted by John Watson in a post to GEN-MEDIEVAL-L Archives, Sir Robert le Vavasour of Shipley "was sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, firstly in 1236, for half a year, for half a year in 1239, half a year in 1246, then sheriff for eight years from 1247 to 1255." ... "This Sir Robert le Vavasour of Shipley has often been confused [by Dugdale, Banks, et al] with his namesake, Sir Robert le Vavasour of Hazlewood (father of Maud, the wife of Theobald Walter and Fulk Fitz-Warin). They cannot possibly be the same person. The CP account of Sir Robert le Vavasour of Hazlewood states that [h]e was dead in 1227, when arrangements were made for the wardship and marriage of his son."
