At the time of the 1851 England Census Miriam Gates, age 11, born in Brighton, scholar, was with her father Henry Gates (43) of Buxted, egg merchant, and his [2nd] wife Jane (34) of Brighton, at 25 North Lane, Brighton St. Peter.
In Jun 1859 Miriam Gates was named as a beneficiary in the Will of her maternal grandmother Sarah Vine of Wilmington Sussex, widow.
Miriam Gates, age 18, spinster, arrived in Melbourne Australia with her family per the vessel Peter Maxwell on 22 Jul 1859. 5

"I, Edmond James Morffew, of 130 Skipton Street Ballaarat in Victoria, carter, make oath and say:
1. That Miriam Morffew, deceased, died on the tenth day of May one thousand eight hundred and ninety five at Ballaarat East ...
2. That the said deceased left property in Victoria not exceeding in value the sum of £113 8s., consisting of real estate of the value of £75 and personal property of the value of £38 8s.
3. That the said deceased left her surviving Miriam Ede of Skipton Street Ballaarat, Albert Ernest Morffew, William Henry Morffew, and Henrietta Elizabeth Morffew of of 1 Little Peel Street North Ballaarat East, and me this aforesaid, the children of the said deceased, who are her only surviving next of kin and the only persons entitled by law to share in her property.
4. That I am the eldest son of the deceased, and as such I claim to be entitled to administration of her estate.
5. That I have made careful inquiry and search, but am unable to find any Will of the said deceased.....

Dated this 31st day of May 1895.
