  Research Notes:

Family name also spelled TABARAT and TABRETT.

-------------------------

George's only son, also named George, born in 1700 in Hastings St. Clement, is shown in the Register as son of George by Elizabeth which is evidently an error. George married Jane Christmas at the beginning of 1698 and their youngest child, Martha, is recorded in 1703 as the daughter of George and Jane. George Tabret the father died in the following year. If the name Elizabeth were correct it would indicate another George Tabret in Hastings at the turn of the century and there is no evidence that this was the case. There are no other entries of children of George and Elizabeth. Furthermore, there is no marriage record of a George Tabret / Tabrett and an Elizabeth between 1680 and 1700; there is no burial record for a supposed Elizabeth Tabret and there is only one burial record for a George Tabret in East Sussex between 1700 and 1755 (i.e. in 1704 in Hastings), such that neither the Elizabeth Tabret who married William Cooper in 1702 in Ringmer (about 28 miles west of Hastings), the Elizabeth Tabret who married Henry Mace in 1714 in Newhaven (about 31½ west of Hastings), nor the Elizabeth Tabret who married William Vinell in 1715 in West Firle (about 25 miles west of Hastings), could have been widow of George Tabret of Hastings, especially since 'Widow Tabret' is recorded as occupying a messuage and garden in Hastings St. Clement in a Partition dated 17 Oct 1720 4, and who can be identified with the said Jane who died 10 years later and who is described in the burial record as Jane Tabret, widow, of St. Clement.

-------------------------

In Oct 1680 George Tabrett was named as a beneficiary in the Will of his uncle John Tabrett of Cliffe near Lewes, yeoman, who identifies George as the eldest of the three children of his brother James Tabrett.

In Dec 1691 George Tabrett was a witness to a conveyance (lease and release) from William Moys of Hawkhurst in Kent, fellmonger, to Thomas Carswell of Hastings, cordwainer, of four pieces of land called Whitfeilds, Bromfeilds, Whitfeilds and The Ten Acres Meadow (30 acres) in Fairlight and Hastings All Saints. 5
