Research Notes:
At the time of the 1861 England Census Lucy S. Bendall, aged 16, born in Portsea Hants, stay maker, was with her parents at 16 Durham St., Portsea, Hants.
In October 1862 Lucy Stott and her husband Joseph Thomas Stott were present at the marriage of Lucy's sister Ann Maria Bendell to Henry Evans in Portsea.
At the time of the 1871 England Census Lucy Scott*, aged 25, born in Landport Hants, widow, staymaker, was with her widowed mother at 30 Fratton St., Portsea Hants.
* This was undoubtedly a mishearing by the census taker of 'Stott.'' Curiously, Lucy married again to James Mears, seaman of the H.M.S. Excellent, son of Valentine Mears, in 1864 in Portsea Hants. The marriage record refers to Lucy as a spinster not a widow at the time. The same James Mears, seaman of the H.M.S. Cambridge, son of Valentine Mears, married again in 1869 to Jessie Ann Organ in Devonport, at which time he declared himself a bachelor. As to Joseph Thomas Stott, he seems to have vanished. Based on the 1871 and succeeding Censuses, Lucy's second marriage does not appear to have been recognised, though no official record indicating such has been found so far.
At the time of the 1891 England Census Lucy S Stott, aged 45, born in Portsmouth Hants, widow, was working as housekeeper to Joseph & Eliza Cheesman at 2 Bedford Street Portsea Hants.
At the time of the 1901 England Census Lucy S Stott, aged 54, born in Portsmouth Hants, widow, was working as housekeeper to Joseph Cheesman, widower, at 2 Bedford Street Portsea Hants.
