At the time of the 1871 England Census Edward Bendell, aged 38, born in Portsmouth Hants, married, blacksmith, was aboard the R.N. vessel Bristol in Funchal Bay, Madeira, Portugal. Edward's wife, Rosina Bendell, aged 38, born in Portsea Hants, married, staymaker, was at 3 Wimpole St., Portsea. With her were children (born in Portsea): Rosina (13), scholar, Edward (7), scholar, Jane (5), scholar, and Alice (2).

At the time of the 1881 England Census Edward Bendell, aged 49, born in Portsmouth Hants, blacksmith, and wife Rosina, aged 49, born in Portsmouth, hay farmer, were living at 3 Wimpole St., Portsea. Present were children (born in Portsmouth): Edward G (17) and Alice A (12), scholar.
