  Research Notes:

[The Manor of Norbury], called sometimes Northborough, lies on the east side of London road between Thornton heath and Streatham. In 48 Edw. III. (1374) Nicholas Carew, esq. the first of that antient and illustrious family seated at Bedington, and Keeper of the Privy Seal, obtained a grant of free warren on all his lands, including those of Croydon. He died 17 Aug. 14 Rich. II. (1391) seised of this manor, consisting of a capital messuage, 100 acres of arable land, 300 acres of pasture, 10 acres of meadow, and 20 acres of great wood lying in common, rents of assize 30s. He also held one messuage and 40 acres of land, with their appurtenances, in Benchesham and Norbury, which he had of the gift of John Berkeswell, chaplain, to himself, Nicholas his son, and his heirs. 1
