PEWSEY PETTY SESSIONS, Friday, April 6....
EASTON.—ASSAULT.—Caroline Beckingham and Joshua Beckingham, her son, were summoned for assaulting Thomas Waite. Complainant said he was a labourer, and worked for Mr. Powell of Easton. On the 3rd April, about 6 p.m., he was thrashing. As he was leaving, the defendant Joshua Beckingham came up and accused him of starting a false report about him, viz., that witness had told Mr. Powell that the defendant had been poaching. While they were talking defendant Caroline came up and repeated the accusation. Witness denied it, when she struck him with her hand, and called witness a liar. Joshua then challenged him to a fight, and Caroline backed him. Witness refused to fight. Joshua then pulled his jacket off and struck witness a blow on the head. Witness parried several other blows. Joshua then threw witness against the steam engine, and hit him again two or three times, Caroline saying 'We don't mind paying £2 or £3 for thee.'... Caroline was discharged, but Joshua, who said 'I struck Waite twice because he had spread false reports about me,' was convicted and fined 5s. and 8s. 6d. costs, or in default 14 days' imprisonment.—The money was paid.
