James CAREW of Beddington, Esq.

Eleanor HOO

  • Born: Abt 1449, Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire, England
  • Married: Abt 1468
  • Died: 1520

  Research Notes:

daughter and co-heiress, aged 6 years in 1455. A legatee in the 1455 Will of her father, who bequeathed her 1,000 marks at her marriage. 1

Eleanor's father in his will bequeathed a 1,000 marks to be divided among his three daughters as marriage portions, on condition they agreed to be governed by their mother and half-uncle, Sir Thomas Hoo. Eleanor was married to Thomas Etchingham the son of Sir Thomas Etchingham. That marriage may not have been consummated, since young Thomas died before Eleanor reached the age of fifteen. At some point thereafter Eleanor 'married herself' to James Carew, without the consent or agreement of either her mother or of Thomas Hoo. But when she and her husband claimed the dowry that they believed that Etchingham had repaid Hoo, they were refused on the grounds that Eleanor had not been ruled or governed by her guardians before contracting her second marriage. 2

  Marriage Information:

Eleanor married James CAREW of Beddington, Esq., son of Nicholas CAREW of Beddington, Esq. and Margaret FIENNES, about 1468. (James CAREW was born in 1445 in Beddington with Wallington, Surrey, England and died on 22 Dec 1492 in Beddington with Wallington, Surrey, England.)
