Research Notes:
In 1881, James Aitchison, aged 20, born in Lambeth, optician, was with his father at 28 Peplar Rd., Camberwell Surrey.
In 1901, James Aitchison, aged 40, born in Walworth London, optician, and wife Kate S., aged 38, born in Southwark, were living at 5 Colyton Rd., Camberwell. Present were stepdaughter Florence K. Philcox (19) of Southwark, daughter Mabel M. I. Aitchison* (6) of Camberwell, son Douglas J. (4) of Camberwell, daughter Morna L. (4) of Camberwell, father George Aitchison (74) of Berwick on Tweed, retired printer, widower, mother-in-law Sarah Kraty (75) of Burford Oxon, widow, visitor Annie Bridges (32) of Brompton London, single, hospital nurse, and three servants.
* So-called daughter Mabel Mignon Aitchison married Harry Chipperfield in 1922, at which time her father's name was given as John Aitchison. The Censuses show that John Aitchison and his wife Pauline indeed had a daughter Mabel born about 1894. Moreover, the GROE birth index indicates that (a) Mabel's mother's maiden-name was WHITE rather than KRATZ and (b) there was only one Mabel born during that period.
In 1911, James Aitchison, aged 50, born in Walworth Surrey, optician, manufacturing and retail, employer, and wife of 23 years Kate Sarah, aged 48, born in Blackfriars Surrey (mother of 6 children), were living in Sharwood, Westgate Rd., Beckenham, Kent. Present were children Irvine George (22) of Peckham, studying to be a barrister, Sidney William (21) of Nunhead, optician, Agnes Mary (19) of Nunhead, 1 visitor and 3 servants
