"Walter was born to Frederick G. and Esther Wehmeyer Bohls in Coupland, Texas.
He graduated from Austin High School in 1943 and enrolled in the University of Texas in Austin. During his first semester, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
Walter served as a Signalman 2C on the USS LSM 118 in the Pacific Theater during WWII and participated in the invasion of Okinawa. At the end of the war, he returned to Austin and once again enrolled in the University. During his summmer breaks, he worked in the East Texas oil fields as a roustabout for the Texas Company (Texaco). It was there he met the love of his life, Katie Jo Smith. Walter and Katie were married Oct. 22, 1948.
Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering, he began his 39 year career in the natural gas industry. During those years, Walter worked for United Gas Company in Houston, Laredo, and Orange, Texas. Upon accepting a position with Southern Union Gas Company, he moved his family to El Paso in 1963 and then to Dallas in 1971. During his years in Dallas, he served as Vice-President and Chief Engineer of the Company, and as President and Chief Operating Officer of Wester Gas Interstate, a susidiary of Southern Union as. Walter spen the final years of his career as the Senior Vice President for Engineering and Operations, and Transmisson and Distribution with Valero Energy Corp. in San Antonio, Texas. He was a life member and past president of the Texas Gas Association and a member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers.
After his retirement in 1989, Walter and Katie resided in Horseshoe Bay, Texas, Naples, Florida and Fredericksburg, Texas. For many years, he was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Marble Falls, Texas and Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Texas.
His beloved wife, Katie, preceded him in death on August 15, 2005.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Kopec and husband, Joe, of Austin; sons, Jim Bohls and wife, Jan of Falls County, TX, and Rick Bohls and wife, Robyn of Tampa, Fla; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren." 2
