"It is with sorrow we have to record this week the deaths of two much-respected inhabitants of Troon....
The second is Mr. Joseph Keverne, who died at his home, on Sunday evening last. For some years Mr. Keverne has been troubled with asthma and had not been able, on that account, to work underground as he formerly did.
But Mr. Kevern was at his duties at the weighing bridge, Wheal Grenville mine, some three or four days previous to his decease. That came as a surprise, even after long ailment, to nearly everyone ; and, when they heard of it, all agreed that his loss will be keenly felt, especially by the friends of the United Methodist society in which he held, up to death, important positions. He was one of the trustees, a class-leader, prayer-leader, treasurer, etc.
He also took more than ordinary interest in the Sunday-school and was quite at home when there. He will also be missed by the Troon branch of the Philanthropic society, of which institution he has been elective-secretary.
The funeral took place on Wednesday at Troon cemetery. Quite a crowd attended. The cortege was headed by the Philanthropic society. The mourners were Mr. James Kevern (father), Mrs. Kevern (widow), Messrs. William James Kevern and John Kevern (brothers) and the two Misses Kevern (sisters)...."
