   Research Notes:

"Jacobus Greifenkerl was descended from a well-known family of pastors, public servants et al., but I have been unable to find the connection to this family via the parents or the place of birth.

Jacobus Greifenkerl was a surgeon and birth-assistant. At that time when there were still no doctors in country areas, the surgeons fulfilled an important task. But because they had not studied (at University level), they were not allowed to provide internal treatment. They therefore considered their occupatoin more as a trade.

Jacobus Greifenkerl achieved a high reputation in the country areas here. For instance the Pastor of Stollhamm made the following entry into the church register in 1739 on occasion of the marriage of Johann Hinrich Greiffenkerl: 'Son of the late Jacobus Greiffenkerl, famous surgeon and owner in this municipality'.

Jacobus Greifenkerl lived first in Atens following his marriage then for a few years in Tossens, then again in Atens and finally in Stollham where he presumably bought the farm, which was later run/managed by his son Carl Wilhelm.

On occasion of the death of Jacobus Greifenkerl on 23/8731 the Pastor of Stollhamm made the following entry into the church register: 'Jacobus Greifenkerl, surgeon and birth-assistant died after a painful and protracted sickness, aged 51 years and 15 weeks.

   Marriage Information:

Jacobus married Anna Elisabeth RUGERÖHE, daughter of Harm Diedrich RUGERÖHE and Unknown, in Nov 1703 in Atens, Niedersachsen 1. (Anna Elisabeth RUGERÖHE was born on 1 May 1685 in Atens, Niedersachsen 2 and died on 9 Aug 1747 in Stollhamm, Niedersachsen 1.)
