-----------------------
"The death of Mr Matthew Batters, which occurred on the morning of Tuesday last, will cause a general feeling of sincere regret, not only in the Learmonth district, where he had long resided, but in Ballarat, where he was well known and respected amongst the leading men of business. In Learmonth (writes our local correspondent) Mr Batters' death will create a great blank, as be was a useful man in every respect, and charitable to a large degree; no movement for any good purpose having ever been set on foot but that he was foremost to contribute both time and money. Mr Batters held a seat in the Ballaratshire Council, and by his death an official vacancy has been created."
