Most (secondary) sources show William as the son of Walter Devereux and his wife Margery de Braose, born c. 1290 or earlier. However, Morgan G. Watkins in Collections Towards the History and Antiquities of the County of Hereford in continuation of Duncumb’s History, Hundred of Radlow (1902) and Evelyn Philip Shirley in Stemmata Shirleiana (1873) insert another generation, namely Stephen Devereux of Bodenham and his wife Cicely, showing Stephen having been born c. 1290 and his younger son William c. 1315. Chronologically this is possible, since Walter, father or grandfather of William, was born c.1260. For the moment, however, the generally accepted parentage of William is shown here until such time as this can be resolved.
