DEATH OF MR. H. L. PUGH.
FORMER MASTER OF THE HARRIERS.
Formerly Master and hon. secretary of the Bexhill Harriers, Mr. Harry Lewis Pugh of "Beachcroft," Magdalen-road, died yesterday (Friday) morning after a long illness. He was aged 65.
Mr. Pugh, who took up his residence in Bexhill nearly 30 years ago, was senior director of the Cooden Engineering Company, Ltd., which he established in 1921, and developed with his son.
Before coming to Bexhill Mr. Pugh lived at Tunbridge Wells for several years, and was at one time hon. secretary of the Eridge Hunt. He also owned a small pack of staghounds, with which he hunted the Eridge country. For five years he held the secretaryship of the Bexhill Harriers, and after being Joint Master for one year with Lord Brassey, he became Master. He also organised point-to-point races at Cooden.
Mr. Pugh always took a keen interest in rowing, and was a prominent official at the early regattas held at Bexhill. He was the donor of the Pugh Challenge Cup for competition at the coast regattas, and the trophy, which is awarded each year to the Rowing Club winning the junior pairs event most times in a season, is at present held by the Bexhill Club, who also won it three years ago.
Before the war Mr. Pugh stood as a Council candidate in the Central Ward, when he was defeated, though only by seven votes.
During the war Mr. Pugh was in charge of an ammunition magazine at Loughborough, and he was also a member of the committee of inquiry which investigated the Silvertown explosion.
Mr. Pugh was a member of both the New Club and the Cooden Beach Golf Club. In recent years he had travelled extensively, visiting many parts of the world.
In addition to the widow, he leaves two sons and a daughter....
