"Bovey Builder's Alleged Causes of Failure [extract]

Accepting responsibility for the liabilities of the late Mr. W. G. Winsor was one of the causes of failure alleged by Walter John Pepperal Winsor, builder, of Bovey Tracey, who with his mother Emily Augusta Winsor, underwent public examination in bankruptcy at the Castle of Exeter on Wednesday.
Slackness of trade and law costs were also advanced as contributory factors.
Mr. Walter Winsor said his father, who died in 1932, was a bankrupt in 1925, after which he continued business. After his death the business was carried on by debtor under the name of Winsor and Son and the banking account was in the name of Mrs. Winsor. He thought his father owed £300 to £400 at the time of his death in addition to expenses relating to his illness. Six months after his father's death creditors commenced to press and he had to borrow £20 to pay wages. Business, he thought, improved after he took on management, but trade went down again and creditors were not prepared to wait....
It was stated that no balance sheet or stock sheets were ever kept. Debtor added that he realised the business was insolvent in March, 1932, when his father died, and his mother let him act on his own discretion. At the time there was plenty of work, but a great deal had fallen off during the year.
Mrs. Winsor was examined regarding some small debts. She stated that a very small quantity of the furniture belonged to her. She received £75 from her husband's estate, but that went to pay creditors.
The examination was closed." 6
