CORONER DISAGREES
Dr. R. L. Guthrie, the deputy-coroner at Hackney, disagreed with a verdict of a jury who inquired on Saturday into the death of George Lampard, 70, a retired tea merchant, of Clapton-common, who for nine years was a member of the London County Council, and had recently been made a J.P.
Mrs. Lampard said her husband was defeated at the last London County Council election, that he took his defeat very much to heart, and became very depressed at having nothing to do. He had also been worried by money losses, but he was not in financial difficulty. On Thursday his bedroom door was found locked, and the door was burst open. Her husband was lying on the hearthrug unconscious. His head was near a gas-ring and the gas was turned fully on. Both windows were wide open.
The medical evidence was to the effect that death resulted from the inhalation of coal gas.
The jury were of the opinion that the deceased, in falling, accidentally turned the gas on, and returned a verdict of "Accidental death."
The coroner said he must record the verdict, but he did not agree with it.
