Sarah Jane Marsden
- Born: Abt 1867, Bethnal Green, London, England
- Married: 6 Apr 1890, Christ Church, Chelsea, London, England 1
- Died: 1933, Fulham District, London, Middlesex, England 2
Research Notes:
At the time of the 1881 England Census Sarah J Ellwood, age 13, born in Bethnal Green London, scholar, was with her parents Richard Ellwood (35) of Somersham Huntingtonshire, bricklayer's labourer, and Sarah (38) of Bethnal Green, laundress. Note that Sarah's parents married in 1879; hence why Sarah's family name is shown as 'Marsden or Ellwood' at the time of her marriage in 1890.
At the time of the 1911 England Census Sarah Budgen, age 43, born in Peckham London, widow (mother of 3 children, 1 deceased), laundress (own account), was living at 20 Ismailia Road Fulham London. With her were children: Esther Budgen (18) of Chelsea London, laundry maid, Frederick Budgen* (6) of Battersea London, at school.
* While Esther is confirmed to have been daughter of Friend Joseph Budgen and Sarah, Frederick, being aged 6 years in 1911 means he was born at least four years after the death of Sarah's said husband. Frederick, recorded as having been born in Battersea, can probably be identified with Frederick William, son of Frederick William Budgen (Sr), labourer, and Sarah, born 9 September and christened 30 Sep 1904 in Battersea St. Mary. When Frederick William Budgen married in 1934, he gave his father's name as Frederick. There is no record of Sarah having re-married to Frederick William Budgen (Sr.) between 1900 and 1904. However, The maiden-surname for the mother of Frederick William Budgen Jr. given in the GROE birth index is Ellwood. A daughter Lilian Queenie Budgen, whose mother's maiden-name was Ellwood, was born in 1906 and died in the same year (noting that, in the 1911 Census, Sarah indicated she had had 3 children, one of whom was deceased by then).. It seems, therefore, that either (a) Sarah did marry Frederick William Budgen Sr., or (b) Frederick and Lilian were Sarah's natural-born children by Frederick William Budgen. As there is no record of the death of Frederick William Budgen Sr. between 1904 and 1911 (at which time Sarah was widowed), option (b) seems most likely.
