FATAL ACCIDENT.—An inquest was held at the Town-hall on Friday afternoon, before J. B. Stephens, Esq., borough coroner, on the body of John Banfield, aged 58, a labourer, who met his death on Tuesday last. Henry Banfield, labourer, son of the deceased, living at 6, Sharp's yard, King-street, identified the body as that of his father. He stated that on Tuesday he was at work with his father for Mr. G. Chambers, in Grecian-street, where they were digging out a cellar. At about half-past four in the afternoon the deceased was wheeling a barrow of earth along a plank towards the quarry, when the wheel slipped off, and he fell back into the cellar, a distance of 5ft. His head came in contact with a rock, and when picked up he was insensible. At the time of the occurrence the deceased was not sober, and he had sometimes been a hard drinker. Mr. Hallowes, surgeon, stated that he saw the deceased before he died, and found him suffering from concussion of the brain, which might have been caused by a fall. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death."
