  Research Notes:

Several secondary sources show Francis having been born in Rotherfield Sussex (17 miles east of Ardingly), christened there on 7 May 1614, son of another Francis Comber. These secondary sources provide no additional information to support this hypothesis. There were a few individuals named Francis Comber within the time-period who are not to be found in the available registers

1. John Comber of St. John's under the castle of Lewes made a bequest to, among others, his son Francis Comber, in his will written 1 Apr 1626.

2. Thomas Comber of Buntsgrove in West Hoathly made a bequest to, among others, his son Francis Comber, in his will written 29 Apr 1631.

3. There is also a Francis Cumber / Comber of Hailsham, who was the creditor of Bridget Ellis of the same place, named in her 1686 will.

It seems likely that Francis Comber descends from one of the branches of the Comber family shown in the Sussex Visitations (here). There are several Francis Combers in the pedigree, but they are mostly of an earlier generation. Francis Comber named in the 1626 Will of John Comber of Lewes (a above) was the same as shown in the Visitation as the third son of John Comber and Anne Plomer. According to the Calendar of Sussex Marriage Licences (Archdeaconry of Lewes), John Comber of St. John under the Castle at Lewes, yeoman, married Agnes Plummer of Sowthover, marriage licence issued 7 Jun 1603. It is possible this Francis Comber was the same who married Mary about 1645.

  Marriage Information:

Francis married Mary about 1645.
