The Book of Lacock names “Matildam filiam d’ni Walteri de Clifford” as wife of “Guill. Lungespee tertius, filius Guill. Lungespee secundi”. “Matildis de Lungespe, filia et hæres domini Walteri de Clifford” confirmed donations of property to Shrewsbury abbey, by “patris mei…Walterus de Clifford filius Walteri de Clifford, et Agnetis de Cundy” witnessed by “Egidio de Clifford fratre meo”, by undated charter. “Johannes Giffard dominus de Brimesfeild” donated property to Gloucester College, Oxford, for the soul of “Matildæ Longespee, quondam consortis meæ”, by undated charter, witnessed by “domino Johanne Giffard consanguineo meo”. 1

Order to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to be made pursuant to the king's grant to John Giffard that he recover the terms before granted to him and Maud de Lungespeye, sometime his wife, deceased, for payment of the debts of Walter de Clifford, her father, which terms he has not observed, to wit, that he pay £20 a year.

Nicholas de Audytheleye, who married Katharine, one of the daughters and heirs of Maud Lungespey, tenant in chief, puts in his place William de Weston and William de Betteleye, and Katharine puts in her place Simon Cotyn and William de Bitteleye, and Eleanor and Maud, daughters of John Gyffard and sisters of Katharine, put in their place Roger de Lye and Adam de la Penne to demand and receive in chancery their purparties of the inheritance that belonged to Maud ; and they have a day on the morrow of St. Bartholomew to receive their purparties.

Order to the escheator beyond Trent to deliver to Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln, and Margaret his wife, firstborn daughter and heir of Maud Lungespeye, sometime the wife of John Gyffard, deceased, tenant in chief by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Maud, the pourparty of the said inheritance assigned to them according to the partition made in Chancery by assent of the heirs, to wit, the castle, honour and manor of Clyfford with the hamlets of Meddelwode and Brodemedwe, co. Hereford, extended at £27 16s. 2¾d., and the manor of Glasbury, co. Hereford, extended at £10 9s. 0 ¾d. a year, with knights’ fees, advowsons of churches and all other appurtenances, together with the lands which Margery, late the wife of . . . . . . . , deceased, holds in dower of the said inheritance, when they fall in ; Henry having done homage.

Order to the same to deliver to Katharine de Aldithelegh, second daughter and heir of the same Maud Lungespeye, her like pourparty, to wit, the castle of Tlilanadeury with the commotes of Perveth and Irurin in Wales, extended at £35 3s. 3d. a year, except an acre of land extended at 4d. a year and except £10 of yearly rent in Thlanadeury assigned to Maud Gyffard, fourth sister (sic) and heir of the same Maud Lungespeye, to hold with knights’ fees, advowsons and other appurtenances ; Katharine having done homage.

Order to the same to deliver to Eleanor Gyffard, third daughter and heir of the same Maud Lungespeye, her like pourparty, to wit, the castle of Corfham and the manor of Colmynton, co. Salop, extended at £20 10s. 8d. a year, except an acre of land extended at 3d. a year and 100s. of yearly rent in the said manor assigned to the said Maud Gyffard, to hold as above ; Eleanor having done homage.

Order to the same to deliver to Maud Gyffard, fourth daughter and heir of the same Maud Lungespeye, her like pourparty, to wit, the aforesaid acres of land and rents and the castle and manor of Brenthles in Wales, held by knight service of Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Essex and Hereford, and extended at £13 16s. 10¾d., a year, to hold as above, she having done homage.

Matilda married William de Longspée, Knt., son of William de Longspée, Knt. and Idoine de Camville, in 1254. (William de Longspée died about Jan 1257 in Blyth, Nottinghamshire, England and was buried in The Cathedral, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.)

Matilda also married John Giffard of Brimmesfeld, Knt., son of Sir Elias IV Giffard of Brimmesfeld, Knt., and Isolda Mautravers, about 1271. (John Giffard was born in 1231/2 in Brimpsfield, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England and died on 29 May 1299 in Boyton, Wiltshire, England.)
