Sir Philip BURNELL, Baron of Holgate
- Born: 27 Nov 1268, Acton Burnell, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England
- Married: Bef 15 Jul 1283
- Died: 26 Jun 1294
Research Notes:
Nephew and heir to Robert Burnel, described in the latter's Inquisition Post Mortem as: "Philip son of Hugh Burnel, aged 25 on Friday after St. Edmund the King, 21 Edw. I [1293], is his next heir."
The feast day of St. Edmund the king (more commonly called St. Edmund the martyr) was 20 Nov (Julian Calendar), which in 1293 was a Friday. Hence Philip Burnel was born a week later, 25 years earlier. Note, however, that throughout the lengthy Inquisition post mortem taken after his uncle's death, Philip's age varies between 25, 28 and 30 years, though 25 is cited more often. Alternatively, according to Douglas Richardson in his Plantagenet Ancestry... (see below), Philip was born 1 Aug 1264. Where he derives this from I do not know.
----------------------------
Philip Burnel, Knt., of Holgate, Acton Burnell, Condover, Eudon Burnell (in Chetton), Hope Bowdler, Norton (in Condover), and Rushbury, Shropshire, Wymington, Bedfordshire, East and West Ham (in East Ham) and Great Holland, Essex, Little Rissington, Gloucestershire, Letchworth, Hertfordshire, Upton (in Upton Noble), Somerset, Ham (in Kingston-upon-Thames) and Hatcham, Surrey, Great Cheverell, Wiltshire, Kidderminster Burnell, Worcestershire, etc.
King's yeoman, son and heir of Hugh Burnell, Knt., of Wellington and Eudon Burnell, Shropshire, by his wife Sibyl.
In 1291 Roesia Trussel acknowledged that she owed him £12, to be levied, in default of payment, of her lands and chattels in co. Northampton. He was heir in 1292 to his uncle, Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells, Chancellor of England. In 1294 he and John Hastang acknowledged that they owed a debt of £10 to William de Hamelton, clerk. 1

Writ of plenius certiorari to the justice of Chester, on the complaint Nicholas de Alditheleye that the escheator has taken into the king’s hand certain lands &c. which the said Philip held of him, having no respect to the custom of Chester of lords having the wardship of the lands &c. in the county held of them by knight’s service although the tenants hold other lands in the county or elsewhere of the king in chief, 20 Jan. 23 Edw. I. |
CHESTER. |
Inq. made before William de Brichull, lieutenant of the justice of Chester on Friday after the Purification, 23 Edw. I. |
|
From time immemorial as well in the times of the earls of Chester as in the time of King Hen. III and of the present king, according to custom by prerogative hitherto used, lords of fees in the county after the death of their tenants have always had wardship of the lands and tenements held of them by knight’s service until the lawful age of the heirs, although those tenants held other lands &c. in the county or elsewhere of the king in chief.
Philip Burnell lately deceased held of Nicholas de Aldith[eleye] 4 carucates of land and a water-mill in Monkis Copinhal by service of 1/4 knight’s fees.
Edward his son, aged one year, is his next heir. |
SOMERSET. |

Sok Deneys. The said Philip died seised of a moiety of the manor (extent given), except the capital messuage; which moiety he held of the said Nicholas by service of a knight’s fee of Mortain, rendering him a pair of gilt spurs yearly, and the said Nicholas held it of the heir of John de Bello Campo, of his barony of Hacche by service of the said knight’s fee; and the said moiety has been in the king’s hand from Saturday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, when the said Philip died, and still is so: he held other tenements elsewhere of the king in chief; his heir is unknown.
The said Nicholas died seised of the other moiety of the manor (extent given), together with the capital messuage, which he held of the heir of John de Bello Campo, of the barony of Hacche by service of a knight’s fee of Mortain; but he held no other lands &c. in the county. Nicholas his elder son, aged 2 on the feast of All Saints last, is his next heir. The said Nicholas also held a moiety of a certain ‘haywardwyk’ in Ivelcestre, which his ancestors had of the king’s gift rendering nothing, in exchange for a certain land called Deneysesdone in the king’s forest of Northperederton; by reason of which ‘haywardwyk’ the abovesaid moiety of the manor was taken into the king’s hand, and is there still. The advowson of the church belongs as well to the heirs of the said Nicholas as of Philip in turn, but those of the said Nicholas shall first present.
