Philip Basset of Wycombe

  • Born: 1220, Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England
  • Married (1):
  • Married (2): Between 13 Nov 1254 and 23 Mar 1255
  • Died: 29 Oct 1271, Stanley, Wiltshire, England

  Research Notes:

William Reedy names Philip as son of Alan by his first wife. However, the name Aline given by Philip to his oldest daughter suggests that Aline de Gai may have been his mother. The suggested birth date of Philip's daughter Aline also suggests that her father would have been born after 1206 when Alan's wife Aline is first named. The Victoria County History of Buckinghamshire records that Philip Basset "appears to have acquired an interest in Wycombe...for during Fulk's tenure of the manor his name appears in various suits concerning small portions of land in the parish". "Philip Basset son of Alan Basset" was granted "land in Saham…", dated 9 Mar 1235. A charter of King Edward II records that "Philippus Basset miles" confirmed the foundation of Bicester priory, Oxfordshire, for the souls of "…Fulconis Basset quondam Londoniensis episcopi fratris mei".

A writ dated 6 Nov "55 Hen III", after the death of "Philip Basset", names "Aline his daughter, wife of Roger Bygod earl of Norfolk, marshal of England, late the wife of Hugh le Despensir, age variously stated as 22 and more, 24 and more, 26 and 30 and more, is the heir", adding that Philip died "on the morrow of SS Simon and Jude last". 1

  Marriage Information:

Philip married Hawise de Lovaine, daughter of Mathieu de Lovaine and Muriel. (Hawise de Lovaine was born about 1225 in Little Easton, Essex, England and died before 1254.)

  Marriage Information:

Philip also married Ela de Longespée, daughter of William de Longespée and Ela fitz William, between 13 Nov 1254 and 23 Mar 1255. (Ela de Longespée died on 9 Feb 1297/8).
