In 1851 Joseph George, aged 12, born in Redruth Cornwall, mine labourer, was with his widowed mother Mary George (50) in Broad Lane, Illogan, Cornwall.
In 1861 Joseph George, aged 21, born in Redruth Cornwall, miner, and wife Maria George, aged 20, born in Illogan Cornwall, were living in Illogan Downs, Illogan, Cornwall.
At the time of the 1880 U.S. Federal Census Joseph George, aged 40, born in England, miner, and wife Mariah George, aged 40, born in England, keeping house, were living in Butte City, Deer Lodge, Montana, USA. Present were children Joseph Jr. (17) of England, works in mine, John (15) of Michigan, works in mine, Frederick (11) of Michigan.

George, born in England, married, miner, resident of San Bernardino, died of phthisis, aged 63 years. 2 Note that the headstone shows Joseph's date of death as May 16th and the California Register of Deaths, May 26th. These dates may be reconciled if the date in the register is the date of burial.
