Edward C. Vivian, 78, of Palmer Township, a former Palmer Township supervisor, died Friday, May 8, in Easton Hospital, after being stricken at home. He was the husband of Ruth S. (Leaubur) Vivian. They were married for 47 years last August.
A Palmer Township supervisor for 14 years beginning in 1968, and a former police commissioner, he received a plaque embossed with the township seal from the supervisors in recognition of his services.
He was a member of the Palmer Sewer Authority since 1995 and a past member of the township Planning Commission, Economic Development Committee and Plumbing Review Board, and the Easton Area Chamber of Commerce government committee.
A 1952 graduate of Rider University, Lawrenceville, N.J., he worked for the Metropolitan Edison Co. for 37 years until retiring as manager of the company's eastern division, Forks Township, in 1984. Beginning as a sales prepresentative in 1953, he became assistant supervisor of the accounting department in 1967 and attained his final position in 1968.
Born in Easton, he was a son of the late William J. and Lottie (Miller) Vivian.
He was an administrative board member, trustee and past treasurer of Glendon United Methodist Church.
An Army Corps of Engineers veteran of World War II, he served as a first sergeant in Alaska and the European Theater and received the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with five bronze stars.
He was a member of Brown & Lynch American Legion Post 9 and the Tic Toc breakfast club, and a member and past president of the Republican Club, all in Palmer Township.
A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member and past master of General Marquis de Lafayette Lodge 795, Easton, and a member and past president of Forks of the Delaware Shrine Club. He was a member of the Lehigh Consistory, Allentown; Easton Forest 35, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Easton Royal Arch Chapter 173, and Rajah Temple, Reading.
He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club and current secretary-treasurer of the Kiwanis Foundation, both in Palmer Township, and a past Lieutenant Governor of Division 17, Pennsylvania Kiwanis.
Survivors: Wife; son, James A. of Wilson; daughter, Diane V. Jensen of Easton; sister, Naomi of Williams Township, and two granddaughters."
