" The death is announced of the Rev. S. J. Batten, who was in charge of the Methodist Circuit of Templers, and resided at Freeling. Deceased who was 43, had been in the ministry for 20 years. He entered the work at Port Augusta through the influence of the Rev J. Thome, and was ordained 16 years ago. His term was spent at Way College, and since then he had been stationed in turn at Port Broughton (twice), Port Pirie, Gawler, Eudunda, Yankalilla, Goulwa, and Templers. He was a thoughtful and studious minister, and an earnest preacher and worker. About a year ago he became ill and since than had been able to do only three .months' pastoral work. He died at Belair. A widow (a daughter of Mr J Gould, of Bowden) and three children survive. Mrs F Williams, of Kadina is a sister and Mr F. Batten, of Renmark is a brother of the deceased." 5
