At the time of the 1881 England Census Sarah Carter, age 34, born in West Hoathly, and [2nd] husband John Carter, age 41, born in Horsted Keynes, general labourer, were living in Shaptham House, West Hoathly. With them were John's children (born in West Hoathly): John Carter (19), Edward Carter (13), Alfred Carter (11), Charles Carter (8), Sarah's daughter Kate Mighall (10) and Sarah's father-in-law William Mighall (78).
