At the time of the 1861 England Census George Nickalls, age 24, born in West Hoathly, agricultural labourer, and wife Mary, age 30, born in East Grinstead, formerly cook, were living in Gosling Cottages, East Grinstead, Sussex. With them were an unnamed daughter (under 1 month), and George's mother Barbara Nickalls, age 48, born in West Hoathly, widow, formerly house servant.
