"WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Helen B. Patton, 90, of Wessington Springs, died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center. Her funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Wessington Springs with the Rev. Sara Olson Dean officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Basham Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Helen Belle Horsley was born to Emery and Catherine (Davis) Horsley on July 22, 1922, at Okaton. She graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1941.

She married Newell Patton in San Diego, Calif.. on Oct. 20, 1942, while her husband was serving in the Coast Guard.

She and her husband owned and operated Patton Chevrolet in Wessington Springs. They later owned and operated a salvage yard. She was also an employee at Van’s Toggery and later Weber Drug/Thornton Drug.

She is survived by four children, Myrna (Gary) Schwartz of Springdale, Ark., Carla (Marvin) Mentzer of Wessington Springs, Verna (Gary) Spencer of Fort Pierre, and Donald (Debra) Patton of Wessington Springs; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Patton of Minnetonka, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald; a sister, Ferne Walker; brothers-in-law, Robert (Beth) Patton, Paul (Dorothy) Patton, Lester Patton, Harold Arnott and Arlo Tiede; a sister-in-law, Eloise Patton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband (Newell); her parents; three brothers; and her son, John Patton." ²
