Obituary

"Stuart V. Clemence, 81, of Winona, died Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona. Stu was born in Ironwood, Michigan, on June 24, 1928, the son of Stuart and Violet (Barnes) Clemence.

Stu served in the U.S. Army twice. First toward the end of World War II, then was called up to serve during the Korean Conflict with the 186th AAA OPNS unit in Korea, attaining the rank of corporal.

On May 16, 1953, he married Mary J. Hoffman in Winona. Stu worked as a traffic manager for Bay State Milling Co. of Winona, retiring in 1993.

Stu is a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, VFW Post #1287, Elks Lodge #327 and a past member of Eagles Aerie #1243, all of Winona. He is a past secretary of the Minnesota Transportation Club. His proudest moments were his longtime activities in American Legion Post #9, Winona, of which he is a life member and was also awarded honorary life membership for all his service.

Stu’s service to the American Legion, included holding every office in Post #9, a plaque and Certificate of Appreciation was given to Stu, which states, “In recognition and sincere appreciation of outstanding service and assistance which contributed to the advancement of the American Legion programs and activities dedicated to God and Country. By Members of Leon J. Wetzel Post 9, Winona, Minnesota, Department of Minnesota this 14th day of November 2004” and is hereby recognized “Mister Legionnaire of Post 9, Post Executive Board Member, Memorial Club Board Member, 1st Vice Commander, Post Commander 1973, Post Adjutant 26 years, 1st District Vice Commander, 1st District Commander, Honorary Life Member 1979, Legionnaire of the year 1982, Chef-de-Gare 40/8, Correspondent 40/8, ‘Post Everlasting’ Chairman and Chairman of Numerous Post Activities.”

Stu is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, Thomas (Debby) Clemence, Springfield, IL, and their children, Matt, Jeff and Brad; David (Kathy) Clemence, Annandale, MN, and their children, Joe and Nick; daughters, Jenny (Andy) Borkowski, Lewiston, MN, and their children, Kayley, Brady and Marisa; Kerry McInnis, Alexandria, MN, and her children, Megan, Ryan and Marnie; Jolene (Mike) Duellman, Champlain, MN, and their children, Jessica and Alyssa. Also one great- granddaughter, Elizabeth.

Stu was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Iris Poljack.

Stu was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather and a very proud veteran...." 3
