LINK BETWEEN OLD AND NEW

THREE GENERATIONS OF RATE COLLECTORS

LOCAL GOVERNMENT has been revolutionised in this century, and Camborne, where these changes have been most noticeable, has lost this week one of the few remaining links between the old system and the new.
Mr. Charles Wesley Eddy, who died during the weekend at his home in Wellington-road, exemplified the grand old type of public servant; the man lived for his work in the days before centralisation banished the personal touch from town and country organisation.
He had learned this high ideal of public service from his father who was rate collector before him. The tradition of the family is being carried into the third generation by Mr. R. Eddy, his son, the present rate collector for Camborne-Redruth Urban Council.
Mr. Eddy, who was 83, retired about eleven years ago from his life work as a rate collector in Camborne and district. He had been noted, in the days of the old Camborne council, for his fair-mindedness and his earnest efforts to help the ratepayers. His other notable work was as Clerk to the Burial Board. He took this post on the inception of the Board and remained in it until this was taken over by the council. He was also a prominent member of the Oddfellows.
The funeral at St. Martin's, on Monday, was conducted by the rector, Rev. G. F. Sandfield. Mourners were: Mr. and Mrs. R. Eddy (son and daughter-in-law); Mr. L. and Miss. E. Eddy (nephew and niece); Mr. J. H. Reynolds, Mr. and Mrs. S. Williams sen. (Praze), and Mr. Rowe (Tuckingmill)...." 5
