Obituary
"MR. RICHARD W. SHORT.
The death of Mr. Richard Walton Short occurred at his residence, 117, Grant road, on Sunday. The late Mr. Short, who was 61 years of age, was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, and came out to New Zealand with his parents some 50 years ago. Ever since then he had resided in the city or in the Hutt Valley. For over 20 years he was in business in the Hutt and Petone, and during the last few years as the head of the R. W. Short and Co., house, land, and financial agents, at Petone.
Mr. Short was connected with the sport of trotting for over 30 years. He was the secretary of the old Hutt Valley Trotting Club early in the century, and years later, when the Wellington Trotting Club was formed to hold meetings on the Hutt Park, Mr. Short was appointed secretary. He retained that position up till a year ago, when he reluctantly had to resign owing to ill-health. For some time past the family have resided in Wellington. Mr. Short was probably one of the oldest members of the Central Club.
Deceased leaves a widow, two sons, Messrs. Richard and Horace Short, and two daughters, Miss Violet Short and Mrs. Charles Hughes, daughter-in-law to the Hon. W. M. Hughes, ex-Prime Minister of Australia..." 3
