THE LATE DR. WILLIAM NETTLE.....

Great regret has been occasioned not only in Liskeard, but over a wide area in East Cornwall by the death of Dr. William Nettle, of Parade House, Liskeard. Dr. Nettle, who was in his 78th year met with a seizure about six months ago, from which he rallied in a remarkable manner, and many friends were pleased to see him out driving again. His heart, however, was affected and about three weeks ago he became seriously ill and despite the devoted care and attention of his medical colleagues he gradually sank, and on Wednesday afternoon in last week he breathe[d] his last. Mrs. Nettle survives him with one daughter (Mrs. B. B. Metcalfe) and several grandchildren.

Dr. Nettle who was well-known and highly esteemed by all classes because of his very kindly and generous disposition—he was a great friend of the poor—was for more than half a century a leading figure in the public life of the town, of which he was a native. In his youth he became a pupil of the late Dr. Alfred Prideaux, of Liskeard, whose daughter he married. In 1871 he entered into partnership with Dr. Prideaux and practised in the borough up to the end of 1919. He was a member of the Town Council for ten years from 1881 and was Mayor on four occasions. He was then appointed medical officer of health for the borough as well as of the Rural District. He held the former office up to the time of his death, while his post under the District Council he resigned about a month before his death, after 45 years' honoured service. Dr. Nettle was both a borough and country magistrate, a member of the Board of Guardians, a surgeon-lieutenant-colonel in the old 2nd Volunteer Battalion D.C.L.I., and was associated with many educational and philanthropic bodies. As vicar's churchwarden for many years he took a prominent part in the management of church affairs, and acted as correspondent for the church schools. A member of the Masonic Order, he was a past G. Warden of Cornwall, P.M. of St. Martin's Lodge, Liskeard, and a Past Principal of the Royal Arch Chapter. He celebrated his golden wedding in August, 1923....
