Merle James HINES

   Research Notes:

"Merle J. Hines was born at Newell on May 27, 1898, the son of Frank and May Hines. He passed away at the Buena Vista County hospital Saturday, April 14, 1973, at the age of 74 years, 11 months. He attended the Newell schools and Auto-Mechanic school in Sioux City During all of his lifetime he had followed the carpenter trade. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, transferring his membership to Storm Lake when he and his wife moved here in October, 1957. On Oct 27, 1918, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Papik in Newell. They observed their golden anniversary in 1968. He was a member of S.A.T C in Storm Lake and a charter member of the American Legion Post 193 of Newell and had obtained his 50-year membership. Mr. Hines and his wife had donated the plot of land in Newell to the Legion and a monument was erected for observance of the flag on any necessary occasion. Had he lived until February he would have observed his 50-year membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Newell, and was also a member of the Storm Lake Encampment No. 86 where he was just recently promoted to the rank of Major of Canton Gilliland No. 21 He was past president of all branches and very devoted in attendance as long as his health permitted.
