Obituary.
DEATH OF REV. H. J. POPE.
The Rev.Henry James Pope, whose death occurred at his residence, Highbury Street, Prospect, on June 22, had been on the supernumerary list of the Methodist Church since 1909. Mr. Pope was born in Cornwall 75 years ago and came to South Australia in his 21st year. He entered the ministry 12 months later, his first station being Moonta. In 1870 he served at North Adelaide, and was subsequently entrusted wih the oversight of important circuits, including Adelaide and Gawler. He was twice elected President of the Primitive Methodist Conference. He wae also president of the Methodist Conference after the union of the churches. He was possessed of a keen and logical intellect. He was recognised as an authority on all matters relating to connexional laws, rules, and customs, and was known among his brethren as "the connexional lawyer." He had fine business abilities, which found scope in the control of the Methodist Book Depot and as treasurer to several funds. He edited the quarterly magazine of the denomination in a masterly manner. He was an eloquent and successful preacher, and was much loved by the people in all the districts in which he travelled." 5
