John J. Stoneman 77, of Mission, Texas, formerly of Duluth, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in Ventcor Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

He was born in Duluth to Samuel and Ameilia Rose (Perkins) Stoneman on Nov. 22, 1921. John graduated from Denfeld High School and the Duluth State Teachers College. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

John had been an elementary and special education teacher at the following: Mount Edgecumbe, Alaska; Brigham City, Utah; Intermountain Indian School, Net Lake Indian Reservation, Net Lake, Minn.; Wrenshall, Minn. School District; and Hermantown School District, from which he retired.

He served on the Proctor School Board for two terms and he had been president of the Minnesota State Teachers Federation, Hermantown Chapter. He was also a former member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church.

John was preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Mary (Kreidler), on May 26, 1996; his parents; and brothers Robert and Norman.

He is survived by his second wife, Olga Maria of Mission; sons Thomas J. of Hibbing, William F. (Sandra) of McFarland, Wis., and Robert N. of Duluth; daughters Mary (Jay) Humphreys-Sprague of Miami, Dorothy R. (Dale) Risk of San Ysabel, Calif., Lucille A. (Timothy) Riley of Saginaw, Jean L. Stoneman of Duluth and Rebecca M. (Brian) Zapp of Saginaw; a brother, Russell of Portland, Ore.; sisters Dorothy Kopp of Redding, Calif., and Mona Kopp of Prineville, Ore.; special aunts Carmen Borchert, Esperence Perkins and Hazel Perkins; grandchildren Jeremiah, Karisa, Anne, Rebecca, Sarah, Michelle, Kipp, Brandon, Andrea and Kelly; and a great-granddaughter, Karli..."
