Wilhelmina Caroline Dorow
- Born: 1850, Germany
- Married: 23 May 1875, Whitechapel, London, Middlesex, England 1 2
- Died: 1 Mar 1878, Orange, New South Wales, Australia
Research Notes:
During the voyage to Australia, Wilhelmina gave birth to a son. They named him William Star Bohlsen, the middle name no doubt from the ship’s name ("Star of India"). The actual date and location of the birth are lost in the past. I doubt that the ship’s surgeon’s log still exists which would clarify this. The arrival passenger list simply lists him as ‘infant’. Wilhelmina and son died on the same date. I suspect that the cause was typhoid fever — a report from the Evening News, Sydney, Thursday 28 March 1878 reads:
This epidemic is, we regret to say, now very prevalent in Orange (says the WESTERN EXAMINER). MR. R. Nelson's eldest unmarried daughter fell a victim to typhoid fever last week, and was buried on Sunday morning. - Her remains were followed to the general cemetery by a large number of the people of Orange, who deeply sympathise with the bereaved family. We have heard likewise of several deaths by which helpless children have been deprived of their parents. In Mr. Hill's family, of the Golden Fleece Hotel, two deaths occurred within ten minutes of each other ; the one, however, an old man, a relative of Mr. Hill's, and the other, one of Mr. Hill's children. Such strokes coming so closely together, give painful instances of the uncertainty of life. 6
