James Prideaux and wife came to Beetown in August of 1834. Matthew Edwards and wife were the next settlers, who were guests by invitation t ogether with Captain Ester and some other miners at an Independence di nner given by James Prideaux on July 4, 1835. Mr. Edwards commenced k eeping hotel and sold groceries and miner's supplies in 1835.

June 02, 1880 census record, found living with son Alfred & wife Bessi e.

The first settler in Little Grant Township was James Prideaux who came in 1837 to the southwest corner of the township. Two families, the James Edwards and the James Prideaux were very dissatisfied with life in Cornwall, England after hearing wonderful stories about America and the great opportunities here. Both families decided to see if it was true. Early in the spring of 1833 John Edwards started out with his 15-yearold daughter Mary, leaving his wife and other children in England until they could find a home for them in America. It took 13 weeks to make the trip across the Atlantic. They first settled in the Dodgeville-Mineral Point area. Mr. Edwards decided to go back for his wife and family, but didn't know what to do with Mary. The younger James Prideaux said he would like to wed Mary, so they were married in August of 1833. They started mining, but decided to move west to Grant County and settled in Little Grant Township in 1837 in a log cabin in the timber. The James Edwards family returned from England and settled near them. They raised wheat and had to take it to Prairie du Chien to be sold. Later, when schools were needed, Prideaux donated land for two of them; the Prideaux School in Section 31, and the Budworth School in Beetown Township. James and Mary were parents of 15 children, 7 of whom died in infancy. Many of the Prideaux died during the cholera epidemic in the 1850s.
