   Research Notes:

According to the GROE Marriage Index, James married either Hannah Knapman or Sarah Cobley in 1877. Daughter Mabel was born in the following year. James' wife was dead by 1881. A Sarah Knapman died in 1875 (too early). A Hannah Knapman died in 1878 aged 32. There is no record of a Hannah Knapman born c.1846. James' brother George does not appear in the 1881 Census and his wife Hannah died in 1878. Without current access to James' marriage record, the only explanation is that George died before 1877 (though no record so far has been found for his death), and James married his widow (Hannah Knapman) who died shortly after given birth to Mabel.

James married Hannah POPE, daughter of James POPE and Grace ROPER, in 1877 in Totnes District, Devon, England 1. (Hannah POPE was born about 1846 in Street, Devon, England and died in 1878 in Totnes District, Devon, England 3.)
