"FATAL ACCIDENT AT GWITHIAN TIN STREAMS,
CONNOR DOWNS MAN KILLED.

A shocking fatality occurred at the Nancemelling tin streams, Gwithian, on Thursday, when Charles Vivian, 54, engine man, met his death under tragic circumstances. It appears that deceased was at work in the engine house when Mr. John Smith, the manager of the streams, who was standing at the end of the weir, heard an unusual sound coming from the direction of the engine house as though something was wrong. He looked in the direction from where the sound came, and saw some clothes revolving around the shafting, which was about twelve feet from the ground. The manager shouted for assistance, and ran to the engine house, which was about a hundred yards away. A tragic sight met the helpers. Deceased was lying on the ground, his right arm severed from his body. There was a cut on his face, and blood was flowing freely. Dr. Thomas soon arrived on the scene, and Mr. Vivian was removed to the hospital by members of the Camborne Ambulance Brigade, under Corporal Wood.

He expired later in the day. He leaves a widow and five children, the youngest of whom is seven, to mourn their loss, and to whom the greatest sympathy will be extended.

The inquest will be held at Redruth this (Saturday) afternoon." 4
