He succeeded his father in 1131 as Comte de Barcelona, Cerdanya, Besalú, Girona i Osona. Barcelona's territorial stability was threatened by Aragonese advances on Lérida and Tortosa, cut short by the death of Alfonso I King of Aragon in 1134. His marriage eventually united the county of Barcelona and the kingdom of Aragon under a single ruler, although the two territories retained their separate political identities. 1
Ramón married Infanta dońa Petronila DE ARAGÓN, daughter of Infante don Ramíro II “el Monje” DE ARAGÓN and Agnes (Mathilde) DE POITIERS, on 11 Aug 1137 in Barbastro, Somontano, Huesca, Spain. (Infanta dońa Petronila DE ARAGÓN was born about Jul 1136 and died on 17 Oct 1174 in Barcelona, Spain.)
Marriage consummated early 1151.
