" William Doorne, of Gawler, painter, was charged, on the information of his wife, Delia Doorne, with leaving her and his son without adequate means of support. Defendant pleaded not guilty, and was defended by Mr. J. W. Downer. Complainant deposed that defendant was her husband. They had one child, aged 13 years, who lived with her, and was very delicate. She was in service as housekeeper to a Simon Pepperell, of Wright-street, Adelaide, at 8s. a week. She did not wish for any support from her husband for herself, but wanted 10s. a week for the boy. Defendant earned £2 8s. a week. By Mr. Downer—Had been eighteen months at Pepperell's. Her husband wanted to sell her to Mr. Pepperell for £25. She never sold herself to Pepperell. She was then cross-examined to show that there was a criminal relation between herself and Pepperell, and that Pepperell had interviewed a Iawyer to see if he could marry her without a divorce. A letter written by complainant to her husband, bearing an admission that she was living in improper relations with Pepperell, was produced. She admitted having sent the letter, but stated that the part specially brought before the notice of the Court had been written by her with a view only to pique her husband. Simon Pepperell was also examined and stated that Mrs. Doorne was his housekeeper. He had kept the boy, but it was not so agreed. By Mr. Downer— Paid her once in two or three weeks. Would marry her if she was a widow or divorced. (Laughter.) Had told her so. She had been with him six or seven months. He denied the imputation that they lived in an improper intimacy. Doorne had offered, by letter, to sell Mrs. Doorne to him for £25. Doorne, the defendant, also gave evidence, stating that he was willing to maintain his son and keep himself. He admitted having offered to let Pepprell take his wife off his hands, but no sum was stipulated. He did not now look upon her as his wife. In answer to the P.M., the lad, who appeared with his mother, declined to go back to his father, although he said his mother wished him to do so. Information dismissed."
