"Granny Jenkin's Life of Service (abridged)

In Redruth a family with a great tradition of service has just passed its torch of self-sacrifice from one member who, growing old in her work of fine-spirited charity, has passed quietly away, to another, young and eager to apply her youthful courage to the profession of healing.

There has died at her daughter's home in Lower Rose-row, Redruth, 80-year-old Mrs. Sarah Jenkin. In the heyday of mining she and her husband Charlie, were prominent figures of the Four Lanes mining district, whence the widowed Mrs. Jenkin came to continue here self-appointed task of helping the less fortunate in Redruth.

Today, while she is mourned by hundreds of all ages, from the old man whose shirts were never allowed to go buttonless or torn, to the children who knew they were sure of one Christmas gift at least (from Grannie Jenkin), her grand-daughter, 18-year-old Hazel Billings, has left home to take up her new career as a nurse.

Hazel, this year's Redruth Carnival Queen, has felt herself called to this great work as surely as was her grandmother to her unselfish readiness to aid...." 3
