"CATTLE DEALER'S FATAL FIT OF MELANCHOLY.

A sad story was related at an inquest at Four Lanes, near Redruth, on Friday, on the body of Henry Prisk Jenkin (60), cattle dealer, which was discovered in a well near his home at Four Lanes the previous evening. The inquest was conducted by Mr.E. Boase.

Mary Elizabeth Jenkin, widow, said her husband had done no work for four weeks, and had been melancholy and despondent in consequence. About 3 p.m. on the previous Wednesday he went to the back of the house, and as he did not return witness commenced to look for him, but did not find him. The neighbours were alarmed, and they also searched. The body was found in a well about 5 p.m., at the bottom of the row in which they lived.

Jane Menheniott, widow, said the well was at the back of her house. About 3 o'clock she went to it, and finding the cover off she closed it. Mr. Jenkin did not usually go there for water.

William Henry Johns, Stythians Row, said he saw deceased on Tuesday evening. He seemed alright then but witness only spoke to him in passing. Witness heard he was missing about 3 o'clock on Wednesday. He searched for deceased, and went to the well in consequence of his wife saying she thought she saw him going that way. The well was 48ft., with twenty feet of water, and the opening at the top was only 18 inches square. He discovered by the kibble that there was something at the bottom, and with a grapnel then recovered the body. There was no likelihood of anyone falling into the well by accident, and from the position in which they found deceased witness thought he must have gone in head first.

Dr. W. Hichens said he knew deceased, but had not attended him for some years and then for some minor illness. He attributed death to drowning. The Coroner said it did not appear that deceased could have got into the well unless he intended to, more especially as the cover was kept on. The circumstances pointed to suicide.

The jury returned the verdict of 'Suicide while temporary insane.' " 4
