  Research Notes:

Bracton records a claim, dated 1234/35, relating to "manerium de Burtona" granted to "Gilbertus de Segraue…per consilium Stephani de Segraue patris sui". Henry III King of England ordered "Stephano de Sedgrave" to surrender "Novum Castrum super Linam quod G. filius vester tenet" by letter dated 14 Jun 1234.

The Annals of Dunstable record that “Gilbertus de Segrave” died in 1254 in the prison of “Reginaldi de Puns in partibus transmarinis”. An undated writ after the death of "Gilbert de Segrave" names "Nicholas his son, age variously stated as 16 and 17 as his heir". 1

This feudal lord having married Annabil, daughter and co-heir of Robert de Chaucumbe, obtained a grant, in the 15th Henry III., from Simon de Montfort, Lord of Leicester, of the whole town of Kegworth, in the county of Leicester, and in two years after, had a grant from the crown, of the manor of Newcastle-under-Lime, in the county of Stafford; being the same year constituted governor of Bolesover Castle. In the 26th Henry III., he was made justice of all the royal forests, south of Trent, and governor of Kenilworth Castle. In the 35th of the same reign, he was constituted one of the justices of Oyer and Terminer, in the city of London, to hear and determine all such causes, as had usually been tried before the Justice Itinerant, at the Tower of London. But in three years afterwards, being deputed, with Roger Bigod, Earl Marshal, on an embassy, was treacherously seized, (along with John de Plassets, Earl of Warwick, and divers others of the English nobility,) by the French, as he was returning, and died within a short period, of the severe treatment he had received in prison.... 2

The king has granted the manor of Newcastle under Lyme to Gilbert of Seagrave , with the castle , and all lands and tenements in the external vills pertaining to the manor, with the advowson of the church of Stoke and its other appurtenances, without any retention, to have and hold from the king and his heirs to Gilbert and his heirs forever at fee farm, rendering £20 each year to the king and his heirs at the Exchequer, namely £10 at the Exchequer of Easter and £10 at the Exchequer of Michaelmas, and, moreover, 60s. to the abbot of Chester , which the king previously granted to him to be received per annum from the same manor to sustain a certain chaplain celebrating divine service for the soul of Ranulf, formerly earl of Chester and Lincoln. Order to the sheriff of Staffordshire to cause Gilbert to have full seisin of the aforesaid manor with appurtenances, as aforesaid.

The king has granted to Juliana, who was the wife of Robert of Chalcombe , all chattels that Robert left to her in his testament and that they are to be valued by trustworthy and law-worthy men of the county of Northamptonshire and delivered to her valued , having accepted security that she will answer the king for that value at the Exchequer at Michaelmas in 15 days in the twenty-first year in part payment of the debt that Robert owed the king, unless Juliana can show that Gilbert of Seagrave ought to acquit Robert of that debt. Order to the sheriff of Northamptonshire to cause her to have those chattels so valued.

Order to the king’s escheator in Warwickshire to take into the king’s hand all the lands formerly of Gilbert of Seagrave in his bailiwick on the day he died and to keep them safely, so that he is to answer at the Exchequer for the issues of the same, until the king orders otherwise.
